South Korea will offer helicopters to UN peacekeeping operations (PKO), as part of a "substantive" contribution pledge that it will make at next month's ministerial PKO meeting. Defence Minister Suh Wook stated Monday.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Suh made these remarks at a panel session that was preparing for the UN Peacekeeping Ministerial 2021 scheduled for December 7-8.
It is expected that 700 people will attend the meeting from over 150 countries, including foreign and defence ministers and other relevant UN officials.
Suh stated that South Korea would announce a substantial contribution pledge to provide helicopter assets. These are priorities requirements (for UN operations) and will contribute to the dramatic improvement in the conditions for UN PKO Mission.
According to Yonhap News Agency, South Korea is considering offering 10 choppers for decommissioning after decades of service.
South Korea joined UN in 1991 and sent its first peacekeeping force to Somalia in 1993.
A total of 569 troops currently serve in PKO missions in five countries, including South Sudan, Lebanon, and South Sudan.
